‘Sir Alex Ferguson made my dreams come true’: Beckham full of praise for former Manchester United boss

By Scott Hunt

David Beckham has insisted that he will never criticise Sir Alex Ferguson because the iconic manager made his boyhood dreams come true and it ‘truly the best’.

Sir Alex criticised Beckham in his autobiography claiming the midfielder thought he was bigger than the manager.

In his own new book Beckham states that at Manchester United, nothing went in and nothing leaked out, but wouldn’t criticise Ferguson for putting dressing room stories in his autobiography.

“Well yeah apparently they [dressing room tales] do [come out]”, Beckham said at Q&A to promote his new book.

“I’m not going to sit here and be negative about a man who gave me the chance to play for my boyhood team, who I always dreamt of playing for.

“He believed in me. I was lucky to play under Sir Alex Ferguson for twelve years and he’s truly the best.”

Beckham is currently in the process of trying to setting up a new MLS team in Miami and jokingly suggested he was considering asking Ferguson to manage the team.

“He was one of the first in my phone book to contact as the manager, but I’m not too sure now,” Beckham joked.

Roy Keane received the harshest criticism from Ferguson in his autobiography as Ferguson slated his former captain for criticising his teammates in an MUTV interview.

However, Beckham though was full of praise for Keane.

“For me, Roy Keane is the best captain I have ever played under – he set an example for us young kids,” said Beckham.

The 38-year-old insisted that he is not keen to emulate Ferguson and venture into management.

“I love coaching kids, my own kids and other kids – but management is not something that floats my boat,” he said.

In his interview, Beckham covered a wide range of subjects, expressing how ‘gutted’ he was to leave United, labelling Zinedine Zidane as his favourite ever player and refusing to choose between Messi and Ronaldo.

Beckham, who won 115 England caps before retirement, also reflected on his international career saying it is the only area which he feels was unfulfilled.

“The only thing I wish I achieved was winning a trophy with England,” Beckham said.

“I’ll definitely be in Brazil this summer. It’s going to be one of the best without a doubt.”
