Will Nick Powell loan from Manchester United to Wigan spark midfielder merry-go-round across North West?

By David Aspinall

Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell is being targeted by Wigan Athletic for a potential loan move.

This transfer could spark a North-West midfield merry-go-round in the days leading up to the transfer window’s close next Tuesday.

The 19-year-old midfielder could be viewed as a replacement for James McCarthy, who is expected to leave the DW Stadium.

One potential destination for McCarthy is Everton as a possible replacement for Marouane Fellaini, who has been the subject of two joint bids from Manchester United.

It is hoped that this first team football will help Powell continue his development as he is currently on the periphery of David Moyes’ first team squad.

New Wigan manager Owen Coyle has a strong track record for nurturing young talent.

While managing Bolton Wanderers he took Daniel Sturridge and Jack Wilshere on loan from Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

The two players are now regulars in the England international set-up.

Wigan also have a strong recent connection with United as they have been the temporary homes to both Tom Cleverly and Angelo Henriquez in the last few seasons.

Powell was signed from Crewe Alexandra last summer for a deal worth up to £6million.

He made his Premier League debut against Wigan, scoring in a 4-0 victory on September 15 2012.

He has made six appearances for the first team without scoring further.
