A ‘perfect’ first appearance for Juan Mata helped Manchester United become the first team to reach 1000 Premier League points at home as they beat Cardiff 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Robin van Persie opened the scoring on his return from injury before Ashley Young sealed a comfortable win against the Bluebirds.
Juan Mata made an impressive United debut and admitted that it could not have gone much better.
“It was a very special day for me – it was perfect,” Mata told MUTV.
“The most important thing was we won and I felt comfortable with my team-mates.
“Now I’m going to train and I’m looking forward to playing at the weekend and trying to do my best for the team.”
United remain seventh in the table despite the win and still sit six points off Champions League qualification.
Despite seeing his side win, manager David Moyes felt his side could have done more.
““I was hoping for it to be much better,” Moyes said.
“I am hoping for our play to be better but I thought there were some good signs.
“We have got Wayne back and Juan made his debut, so all in all it was a good night.”
United face Stoke on Saturday at the Britannia and Moyes will be hopeful his stronger front-line can inspire a charge up the table in the second half of the season.
