Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler was impressed with the resilience of his team against Derby County on Saturday that got them back to winning ways.
The persistent determination of Wigan, despite three consecutive stalemates, finally paid off as James McClean’s late double helped his team back from a 1-0 deficit against Championship leaders Derby County.
Latics have been struggling to turn their possession and threat going forward into goals but Rosler is ecstatic that his squad have consistently applied themselves to turn things around.
“I think that was one of the best performances I have seen since I arrived at the club,” he said.
“This time I really mean that, especially away from home and especially in the situation we have been in for the last few weeks.”
McClean’s 83rd minute goal gave Wigan their first away win of the season helping them to stay clear of the relegation zone following a run of draws and defeats.
Latics now go on to face Fulham this weekend, who lie just one place behind them, but hopefully such a vital result against the great form of the Rams is a sign of things to come.
Defender Rob Kiernan said: “The fans were unbelievable at the end; the supporters stuck with us and we’re thankful for that.
“Hopefully we can give them something to smile about a bit more often now.”
Considering the average displays Wigan have put on recently, the spirit of the team in one of the toughest matches of the season was a vast improvement and Rosler is now looking ahead with confidence.
“I think we finally put some footballing dominance into goals, and I’ve got to compliment every single one of the players, they reacted really well.
“A lot of other teams would have crumbled after half time, but we didn’t and that shows us just how much desire we have in the squad.”
