World Cup fever has gripped the globe – but almost two thirds of 1,000 Americans surveyed still don’t know who Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is.
60% of people in the States admitted to being unaware of the England talisman, who has been the face of the national side’s failure at major tournaments for the last decade.
Other oblivious Yanks guessed Rooney was a stand-up comedian, a poet or even a cowboy in a survey carried out by gaming site Guts.com.
Just 10% correctly identified him as a footballer in the poll instead of deviating into other sports, such as hockey and baseball.
He may have the skills to pay the bills after securing a £300,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford last season – but it’s hard to imagine the Merseysider bringing his Liverpudlian tones to the television as a game show host.
IS HE A POET, IS HE A COWBOY? No… he’s a soccer player!
Similarly, American film fans may have got Wayne confused with Hollywood star Mickey Rooney, who died in April, when 3.4% claimed the 28-year-old was an actor. Football fans could argue there are enough dramatics in the sport as it is.
However, it is hard to fault the ten people who suggested that Rooney is a man – there can be no arguments there.
But 2% just did not care about poor Wazza, who grabbed a goal as England crashed out of the World Cup with only a solitary point to their name.
USA showed up the Three Lions at the tournament in Brazil with their organised and dogged displays and Jurgen Klinsmann’s men face Belgium in the Second Round.
