A handful of past Manchester City players will not be remembering today as just a normal Thursday in June but instead a date when they took centre stage in the World Cup.
David Platt, who as assistant manager has helped guide City to their first ever Premier League title and a second in three years last month, scored the winning goal in England’s 1-0 win over Belgium at Italia ’90.
As the match loomed towards penalties, Platt, playing alongside Stuart Pearce and Steve McMahon, struck a memorable volley in the 119th minute to send the Three Lions through to the quarter-finals.
Celebrations were wild with Peter Beardsley, an unused substitute on the day, also joining in on the fun.
England never made the 1994 edition but at France ’98 David Seaman and Steve McManaman, who made 23 appearances for City, pulled on the prestigious national shirt in a 2-0 win over Columbia.
Going way back in time to 1954 and Ivor Broadis found himself amongst England’s starting 11 as they faced Uruguay in Switzerland.
Then, fast forward twenty years and Kazimierz Deyna captained Poland to a 1-0 win over Sweden in West Germany.
