The tragic on-pitch death of Manchester City midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe was today remembered 10 years on by the club – while his number 23 shirt remains retired to this day.
Foe, who was just 28-years-old, collapsed while playing for Cameroon in the Confederations Cup semi-final on June 26 2003. He died despite attempts to resuscitate him.
The cause of death was later found to have been of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hereditary condition known to increase the risk of sudden death during physical exercise.
Manchester City Club Ambassador Mike Summerbee told the club website: “In his short career at Manchester City, Marc-Vivien Foe made a huge impression, not only on the pitch, but off it, too and was a very popular figure among supporters, staff and team-mates alike.
“He is still sadly missed by everyone at City and will always have a special place in the Club’s history.”
Foe spent the 2002-03 season on loan at Manchester City from Lyon having been bought to the club by then manager Kevin Keegan.
He played 35 times for City and scored nine goals.
