Back of the net: Bolton MP’s joy as Labour propose to tax Premier League and secure grassroots funding

A new proposal that could mean the Premier League is taxed to fund grass roots football has been welcomed by the MP for Bolton North East.

David Crausby, who has been running a national campaign asking the Premier League to commit more money to children’s grass roots football, supports the idea proposed by the Labour Party.

Earlier this year, Mr Crausby launched an e-petition calling for 100,000 signatures to ignite a House of Commons debate about the future of football in the UK.

So far he has 6,601 signatures with the petition closing on March 30 next year.

And the Labour Party have now launched a policy consultation which includes the idea of putting a 5% levy on the Premier League’s income from broadcasting rights, in order to fund grass roots football.

Mr Crausby said: “I’m very pleased to see that the Labour Party have listened to the issues that I have been talking over the last couple of years and are bringing forward policy suggestions to help save grass roots football.

“I would encourage people to keep signing my petition to show support, that way we can get it into Labour’s manifesto and push the other parties to take action as well.”

The petition calls for The Government and FA to work together to ensure that 7.5% of broadcasting rights from the Premier League is committed to grass roots football.

Last year the Premier League signed new deals for TV broadcasting rights, worth more than £5 billion across three seasons.
