In good Kompany: Man City skipper says Lampard effect could be defining factor in Premier League defence

Vincent Kompany believes that Frank Lampard could be the difference in the title race with his experience and ability.

Lampard came off the bench to score a late equaliser against his former club Chelsea on Sunday, and his new captain thinks it will be by no means his last contribution.

The 36-year-old recently signed for new Major League Soccer franchise New York City, but joined the Citizens on loan until January.

“He brings experience. It is not a word you make up,” said the Belgian. “It is something that helps and it is like his goal: keeping your head cool in a moment when you are under pressure and down to 10 men – how many players would have scored that goal?”

Kompany was part of the side that held its nerve to take the title away from Manchester United with the very last kick of their game against QPR.

“Ever since I have been at this club, seasons and big moments have been decided on small events like this one so I will never underestimate what it could mean to our season. It could be crucial,” Kompany said.

“He needed what we can offer him and I think we needed what he can bring to us,” said the Belgian.

“Ultimately you play so many competitions you need all the guys to be there and he is another who will clearly make our team stronger.”

With the MLS season not starting until the New Year, there is scope for Lampard to make a regular return to the Premier League, if City are still keen to have him on the books.

“That is not for me to judge, I think he has his personal plans as well, but I can base things on what I see day in, day out on the training ground and he is one of the better players,” Kompany said.

Lampard’s next opportunity to impress his skipper will be on Wednesday night when Manchester City take on Sheffield Wednesday at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup, before they travel to Hull City on Saturday.
