Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand warns that Danny Welbeck will be ‘threatening’ around goal this season

By Marios Papaloizou

After scoring two goals in Manchester United’s opening day victory against Swansea, Danny Welbeck is hoping to become a constant threat to Premier League defences.

The young striker often found himself shifted to the wing last season but on Saturday evening David Moyes opted to give Welbeck a central role.

Welbeck only managed to score one league during the Reds last campaign but his United teammate Rio Ferdinand believes that the youngster will be more prolific this season.

“Every other department of Danny’s game is fine. It’s just his goalscoring,” said Ferdinand.

“Many people forget he was playing on the wings a lot of the time last season but you still expected him to score more goals.”

Welbeck has already doubled his tally from last season and Ferdinand thinks that the striker is developing in a killer instinct in all aspects of his game.

“You can tell from the way he has approached the season, the way he is training and the way he looks at the moment he has got it in his head he wants to get on the goalscoring sheet.

“You can see that in the positions he is taking up. He is a lot more threatening now.”
