‘I want to be like Scholes’: New Man Utd midfielder Ander Herrera says English great is his inspiration

Ander Herrera has revealed his ambition to emulate the exploits of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

The Spaniard signed for United for £29million from Athletic Bilbao this summer and has started well despite the side’s early season struggles.

The 25-year old midfielder scored his second United goal against Leicester on Sunday but knows he must improve if he is to match the level of Scholes’ past performances.

“The best midfielders in the world, like Paul Scholes scored hundreds of goal,” Herrera told MUTV.

“I want to make and score more goals and I wish one day that I can be like Scholes.

“Goalscoring is not one of my best qualities but I think it’s very important for midfielders.”

Scholes won 25 trophies in 20 years with United and averaged a goal every five games for United, even returning from retirement in January 2012 to help lead the side to the Premier League title in May 2013.

In contrast Herrera had just 15 goals in 186 professional appearances prior to his arrival at Old Trafford in the summer.

He added: “I have a lot of respect for him and I always enjoyed watching him.

“He always worked hard, helped the team and always made a lot of chances not only for himself but for all his team-mates.

“I know it will be difficult but I wish that one day I can be similar to him.”

Herrera has settled well in Manchester and is now looking forward to the rest of the season.

Van Gaal’s side suffered their latest setback away to Leicester last weekend but Herrera is enjoying life at the club and looking forward to helping the team achieve their goals this season.

“I am very happy of course because after a few months I have experienced everything – at Old Trafford, in the city and in the club,” said Herrera.

“I know how big the club is; when you come to Manchester and you play at Old Trafford you feel the real Manchester United.

“I’m really enjoying things and looking forward to the rest of the season. I want to help the team achieve our objectives.”
