In good Kompany: ‘Five or six clubs’ face pressure to gain Premier League glory, says Manchester City captain

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany believes the battle for Premier League glory will be fiercer than ever this season with ‘five or six’ teams all in contention.

The Blues endured a difficult campaign last season after relinquishing their title to derby rivals Manchester United and losing in the FA Cup final to Wigan Athletic.

However, with Manuel Pellegrini now at the helm and £90million worth of transfers coming in, City will look to bounce back in emphatic fashion.

Yet despite splashing the cash, Kompany is still cautious.

“It is not enough to just spend the money; I think a lot of clubs do that,” the Belgian defender told Sky Sports News.

When asked whether or not there is pressure to win the title Kompany said: “You could go round this question to five or six clubs and say the same.

“That’s why the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world.”

The 27-year-old won the league with City in 2012 but recognizes the difficulties in winning the trophy a second time.

“It will take something special, but we will just do as much as we can now in the preparations,” he said.

“Buying new players is one thing, but the way we have prepared has been really good so far and we’re doing our best to be one of the teams to compete for every trophy.”

City’s preparations for the new season have been disrupted as Pellegrini has been forced to return home to Chile following the death of his mother.

“It doesn’t only put things in perspective, it’s a bit of a reality check,” Kompany said.

“Football is more than just the signings; it’s about being in a group, being in a family and him too.

“When he comes back we will make sure there is everything that he can feel at home with us as it’s not easy to be so far away from home.”
