Manchester United are set to add to their summer signings after agreed a deal with German international star Mats Hummels.
The 25-year-old will move from Borussia Dortmund for £16million, according to reports from Spanish newspaper Sport.
Hummels, who won the World Cup with Germany eight days ago, has been on Louis van Gaal’s hit list since being appointed as manager at Old Trafford.
The Germany international bagged two goals at the tournament, heading his side past France in the quarter-finals and had been linked with a move to Barcelona – but reports suggest he will be moving to Manchester before the end of the week.
The imminent move will be a vital one for United, as both long-term centre-back pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have moved on to pastures new, making switches to Queens Park Rangers and Inter Milan.
In his time at Borussia, Hummels made 171 appearances, scoring 15 goals after being released by Bayern Munich as a youngster.
And the German giants may already have plugged the gap he leaves at the back with 20-year-old new boy Matthias Ginter signed from Freiburg as well as the fit again Neven Subotic well-equipped to fill in.
Should the switch be confirmed it will be the third high-profile signing the club have made so far in this transfer window and could see spending near the £80million mark.
Southampton’s Luke Shaw was bought for £30million and Ander Herrera signed for £28million from Athletic Bilbao.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has since provided reassurances to both fans and new manager Van Gaal that money will be available to spend in this summer’s transfer window.
The Old Trafford club will be looking to bounce back from a disastrous campaign last year, after finishing seventh in the league and missing out on European qualification.
