Ashton United joint-manager Steve Halford has issued a rallying cry for his players to step up and be counted as the play-off race reaches the closing stages.
Halford’s side have eight Evo-Stik Premier Division matches remaining and sit in sixth, five points off a crucial play-off place, ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Whitby Town.
The Robins boss is confident his team have the quality to cement fifth spot but has warned that they must win at least six of their remaining matches.
“The lads that I have got are really good and I know a lot of them really well but it is about that extra quality now,” said Halford.
“You need that extra quality to go the extra step at any level. We need that added bit of brilliance at this crucial time and for someone to step up.
“Teams have been swinging in roundabouts and I think we need to win six out of the last eight games – it is a very hard ask but is doable, we will be giving it a good crack.”
Star stiker Dale Johnson will return to the squad after missing last Saturday’s defeat to Barwell, though Halford wants some of his other players to hit form
He added: “I can’t fault any of my players, they are giving absolutely everything but I do want them to really step it up now.
“We would have took being in this position at this stage at the start of the season as it is in or own hands, so we need to give it a good go.”
