Oldham Athletic extended their unbeaten run to 11 with a hard-earned point away to Chesterfield, in what manager Lee Johnson saw as a great advert for League One football.
Jonathan Forte’s eighth goal of the season from the penalty spot gave Oldham the lead just after half time until the Spireites’ Sam Clucas levelled just before the hour mark.
Johnson correctly predicted an entertaining match at The Proact Stadium and was ultimately happy to emerge with a point.
“It’s a good away point and a fantastic game to watch,” he said.
“It was end-to-end with lots of attacking play and great saves from both goalkeepers. It was exactly what we said it was going to be, and if it was 4-4 or 4-3 in one way then people would not have had an argument.
“We had a couple of early shots. Poleon and Forte looked dangerous. They then had a few chances and looked dangerous.
“I thought it was a really good spectacle for League One with two teams that looked confident and looked like they are going to continue winning games.”
Both sides created chances throughout the match, and were it not for Tommy Lee in the Chesterfield goal the Latics could have taken all three points.
“He has pulled off a great save from Ibehre and he seems to have that flying arm that comes out of nowhere,” Johnson said.
“He is a top goalkeeper and if he had two-and-a-half inches more then he would have been a Premier League goalkeeper for many years.”
Travelling fans numbering 1,028 cheered on Johnson’s side, the manager reserving special praise for those who made the journey while promising that his side would improve even more.
“I think they enjoyed themselves and had a lot to shout about. Everybody is behind us at the moment and we have just got to continue,” he said.
“It’ll take time for the partnerships to be where I want them to be but we have a lot of good news with injuries coming back and we will be stronger.”
