Oldham’s interim boss David Dunn has insisted there is more work to be done after Latics came away from Doncaster with their first point since the end of August at the weekend.
In a tale of two headers, the hosts took the lead through Andy Butler in the 26th minute before Athletic defender Jonny Burn, on loan from Middlesbrough, scored his first professional goal to equalise eight minutes later.
Despite the result leaving Oldham occupying a relegation zone berth along with Saturday’s opposition, Dunn praised his players for a point gained amid difficult circumstances during his first game as a manager.
“I don’t think you can ever underestimate a point in football. Doncaster are fighting for their lives as well. We knew it was going to be difficult, so it was a good solid point for us,” said Dunn.
“We had a really good reaction all week starting last Monday, and the lads carried it on today so it pleases me, especially after a bad result last week.”
Dunn rang the changes in his first game in charge, with just five players surviving from Darren Kelly’s final game at Latics boss against Peterborough. Among the alterations, the new player-manager left himself out of the squad entirely.
But focusing on events from the dugout allowed the midfielder to be more objective and identify areas that need improvement.
“Let’s not get too carried away. There is a lot of work to be done but one thing is for sure, we will be doing a lot of work to put things right.
“[Doncaster] got a lot of their momentum by us giving away silly free kicks so as a team we need to have a little bit more discipline.
“The lads showed great character and great togetherness to get back into the game.”
As well as developing his squad on the pitch in training, the former Blackburn man will also be looking to bring in some fresh faces ahead of next week’s local derby with Wigan at Boundary Park.
