Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez feels luck deserted his side during their disappointing defeat to West Ham United at Upton Park.
Despite the Latics creating numerous chances, it was the Hammers who came out on top thanks to goals in each half from Matt Jarvis and Kevin Nolan.
Martinez believes his side were the better team in the second-half and were unlucky to concede two soft goals which could impact massively on their season.
“Sometimes you have moments like that in a season when you play very well and luck doesn’t allow you to collect the rewards that you deserve,” he said.
“I thought today, especially in the second half, we were the dominant force. We created many, many chances and we are the ones that conceded a goal.
“The two goals that we conceded are a little bit soft, but if you look at the overall balance of play, we deserved to get much more than what we got today.”
West Ham were somewhat fortunate to take the lead after 21 minutes when Jarvis’ left-hand side cross found the bottom corner of Joel Robles’ goal.
With only ten minutes remaining, the Hammers sealed the win when former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United midfielder Nolan volleyed home his 100th career goal.
The result leaves the Latics three points adrift of Aston Villa, but Martinez is adamant if his side continued to perform like this, the points will come.
“It’s important that we don’t drop our level of performance. If we keep performing like that, we will get the points that we need,” he added.
“For us it is a good challenge to maintain that sort of performance, because you will never see a run of two games like we have had without collecting anything.”
