World Cup 2014 may be a few months away but Rochdale assistant Chris Beech believes Ian Henderson’s goal against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday was worthy of gracing the world’s biggest tournament.
Rochdale ran out convincing 3-0 winners over ten-man Plymouth at Spotland, moving into second in League Two, just two points behind leaders Scunthorpe United.
Henderson’s second half volley had Beech waxing lyrical after the final whistle following his team’s third win in a row.
“Ian Henderson’s goal was very good, to do a right foot flick and a left foot volley and for it to go in off the bar on the other side of the goal, it is World Cup stuff that,” Beech told reporters.
“Ian’s been brilliant he is very professional and he’s excellent every week and to score goals like that, he deserves it.”
The 28-year-old forward has excelled in the spectacular this season, with this the latest in a collection of memorable strikes including another volley earlier this month against Leeds in the FA Cup.
Not only are Dale looking menacing going forward but Saturday’s clean sheet was their fifth in six matches, which Beech described as ‘something to be proud of’.
While goalkeeper Josh Lillis, the man who has now gone 276 minutes without picking the ball out his net, added: “It very pleasing (to keep clean sheets) we said before the year that we might have been conceding a few too many goals as a team.”
“The clean sheets are not just down to me it’s down to a team effort all the way from the lads up top all the way back to me, so the lads have been defending brilliantly, so it’s been good.”
