‘R.I.P Bolton’: Wanderers fan writes obituary after club buried in 7-1 ’embarrassing’ defeat

By Tom Belger

Fans of Bolton Wanderers have taken to social media en masse to call for change after the club were thumped 7-1 by Reading on Saturday.

One fan went as far as posting a ‘rest in peace’ message to Wanderers, claiming the club’s fan base was in danger of disappearing.

Most of the blame was pointed at manager Dougie Freedman for the Trotters worst away defeat since 1936 and the first time they’ve conceded seven goals in a game since 1982.

Freedman refused to defend his side and forcing his team in for extra training yesterday.

“I’m not going to stick up for anyone. It was embarrassing. Not too many stood up for the jersey,” Freedman told BBC Sport.

Bolton were 4-0 down at half-time and Freedman was furious at the way his side responded to his half-time team talk.

“I don’t want many days like that and I certainly wasn’t prepared for a half-time speech like that,” Freedman added.

“It had to come from the heart. I told the players to play for their pride and their place in the team but I didn’t see too many players who wanted that.”

That wasn’t enough for some fans such as Denn, who posted an obituary to the Trotters season on the Bolton Wanderers forum.

“Never before in my life of supporting Bolton have I ever been so embarrassed, there have been many poor squads and managers but I have always seen commitment,” said Denn.

“The fan base the club has got is now in danger of disappearing and will take a long time of trust before it gets back to anything reasonable. Gartside should resign because we no longer can trust him and his muppets and never shall.

“RIP Bolton Wanderers.”

Another fan posting on a fans forum said: “That result was down to an artificial pitch, today’s debacle was because of a plastic manager.”
