Video: MM’s picks of Manchester United’s top five Premier League away wins over ‘noisy neighbours’ City

By Tom Belger

David Moyes travels to the Etihad stadium for his first Manchester derby this weekend.

United’s record at City in the Premier League is mixed: they were undefeated at Maine Road during the 1990s but after City’s years in the wilderness they lost the last derby played at their old ground.

Since moving to the Etihad, United have won half the Premier League games played there. Moyes will look to pick up another scalp, but in the meantime let’s look back at United’s best victories away to City in the Premier League.

5. 2004/05 Manchester City 0-2 Manchester United

This was United’s first victory at the then called City of Manchester Stadium. The previous season United had been on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. However Wayne Rooney inspired United to a 2-0 win, scoring the first and providing the assist which resulted in a Richard Dunne own goal.

4. 2009-10 Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United

United travelled to the Etihad with all the talk surrounding the game being about the need to silence the noisy neighbours. The pair were meeting for the fourth time that season after drawing each other in the League Cup semi-finals. United were still in a title race with Chelsea and as the game was heading towards a 0-0 draw, Paul Scholes popped up to snatch all three points in the last minute of stoppage time to keep United in the title race.

3. 2006/07 Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United

United needed a win at their neighbours to create a must-win game for Chelsea as the two tussled for the Premier League title.  United took an early lead through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty but hearts were in mouths when City were awarded a late penalty. Edwin van der Saar became the hero as he saved Darius Vassell’s spot kick. United held on and a day later Chelsea lost at Arsenal and United were champions for the first time in three years.

2. 2012-13 Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

City welcomed United to the Etihad for the first time as Premier League champions but it was United who got off to a flyer as Rooney scored twice inside half an hour. United then had a goal controversially disallowed through Ashley Young, then seconds later Yaya Toure pulled a goal back for City.  United looked to have thrown it away when Pablo Zabaleta equalised with five minutes to go. However Robin van Persie, in his first Manchester derby, snatched the points in stoppage time with a free kick.

1.    1993/94 Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

Arguably United’s greatest away win at City in the Premier League, they travelled to Maine Road after recently being knocked out of the Champions League by Galatasaray. The visitors got off to a nightmare start as they found themselves 2-0 down at half time thanks to two Niall Quinn headers. However an Eric Cantona-inspired United came out in the second half and turned the game around. The mercurial Frenchman scored twice to level the game and was then involved in the build-up as Roy Keane scored the winner.
