‘Thanks but no thanks’: Javier Hernandez rejects Valencia to fight for Manchester United starting spot

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester United’s fox-in-the-box striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has turned down the chance to move to Valencia in order to fight for first team football at the Reds.

The Mexican is a fan favourite at Old Trafford but has earned an unwanted ‘super-sub’ tag after performing amazing feats from United’s bench.

It has now emerged that Hernandez was the subject of ‘real interest’ from Valencia over the summer but the player rejected the notion of leaving Manchester.

“The interest from Valencia was real. He had the chance to speak with the sporting director but Javier, I reiterate, wants to stay at Manchester United, this is the challenge,” said Hernandez’s agent in an interview with El Universal.

“He was very grateful to Valencia and the other clubs who called him.

“It’s not a question of money – we didn’t even talk about that subject, there’s only one subject for Javier: he wants to play and be a starter at United.”

Hernandez made 22 appearances for the Reds last season and scored 10 goals.

However, the striker is keen to ensure that he sheds his ‘super-sub’ label and gets more playing time under new manager David Moyes.

“Of course he wants to play more, to have more minutes, to participate more, but he wants to do it at United, he wants to defend the title and go far in the Champions League,” his agent added.

“He wants to triumph in England. He knows that a starting spot comes with working hard and he has to take advantage of the opportunities that come his way, like he did with Sir Alex Ferguson.”
