A Manchester basketball player has become the first woman to breach the 1,000 assist mark in British league history.
Georgia Anderson, who currently represents Manchester Basketball, has played professionally for over a decade.
After studying in the US Anderson returned to the UK for a stint with Leicester Riders before returning home to Manchester in 2016 and is delighted with her latest accolade.
She said: “It feels great to hit that milestone.
‘’I’m grateful to have played with some great players over the years that made those assists possible and look forward to adding to the total this year.”
The 34-year-old was one of the few players who remained on the Manchester team since the change of ownership after last season.
She said: “We’ve had a couple of rough years previously, obviously there’s a new ownership now and we’re moving in the right direction, it seems more professional.
“We’ve bought in a lot of decent import, so I think we’re definitely aiming high, below Top 4 is just not acceptable for us.”
Anderson, who is married to another British basketball legend Jamell Anderson, is a mother of a toddler.
However, it did not stop her from making the All-Star team in the 2023-24 season.
She said: ‘’Not going to lie, it’s not easy to juggle and I have massive respect for anyone doing it.”
The couple have a young daughter and despite the difficulties motherhood brings, Anderson continues to excel on the court, courtesy of the support from her husband.
‘’He is my biggest supporter for sure and obviously to make things easier juggling he really steps in being back and forth from Sheffield,’’ said Anderson.
Anderson was part of Team GB which won silver during the 2018 Gold Coast games.
She revealed the sport has become a lot more accessible to women from when she first started.
“When I look back from when I was a kid playing or even watching the senior women, we are a long way.
Even with the talent that’s on the floor and the level that is being produced.”
Manchester Basketball’s women’s team has enjoyed a great start to their season and are currently second in the championship.
The 34-year-old believes the team have the talent which could help them win some silverware this season.
“I think we are definitely aiming high, below top four is just not acceptable for us.
“Hopefully we’ve started well and we can continue that and win some silverware because that’s on the cards too.”
