‘We will fly up the League Two table’: Bury boss Ronnie Jepson backs league revival… if they take their chances

By Ruth Dacey

Ronnie Jepson believes Bury will ‘fly up the League Two table’ once they start taking their chances after a wasteful outing at the weekend against Bristol Rovers.

Bury battled back after conceding from an early penalty to earn a vital 1-1 draw and point at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Jepson felt his side gave everything against Bristol Rovers and would have come away with all three points with better finishing.

“My lads responded really well to the setbacks and anyone watching could see that they are giving their all,” the interim manager said.

“When we start hitting the back of the net regularly we will fly up the League Two table.

“I don’t know whether the ball bobbled for the big chance we missed in the first half, but we need to take more of our opportunities.”

Bury gifted Rovers a fourth-minute lead after Shaun Beeley brought down Eliot Richards in the box which John-Joe O’Toole slotted home.

But the Shakers fought back and Rotherham loanee Danny Hylton scored his first goal for the club 10 minutes before the break, tapping in after the Rovers keeper had fumbled a Shaun Harrad header.

Harrad was then guilty of one of the misses of the season when he shot over in front of an open goal in the first half and Bury had to be content with a share of the points.

Jepson, whose contract has been extended until the New Year, was pleased with the point and couldn’t complain about the early penalty decision against his side.

“We couldn’t have made a worse start to the game. Shaun Beeley has got the wrong side of his man and gave away a penalty, then we lose Richard Hinds with a big lump on his head,” he said.

“To be fair Matt Harrold came over to me at the end and admitted he caught Richard, albeit unintentionally and I have no problem with that. These things happen in football.”

The result saw the Shakers move up one place to 21st in the League Two table and they now look ahead to Tuesday’s re-arranged FA Cup first round match at home to Cambridge United.
