Matt Le Tissier believes tomorrow’s game at Old Trafford is the best chance his former side have of claiming their first Premier League away win against Manchester United.
United haven’t lost to Southampton at Old Trafford in the league since January 1988 when Colin Clarke scored both goals in a 2-0 win.
Le Tissier, who was part of the Saint’s team that day, feels Southampton’s great start to the season combined with United’s indifferent form gives them great hope of getting something out of the game.
“I know we haven’t won there for a long time but this is the best chance we’ve had in years to get a result at Old Trafford in the league,” the Saint’s legend wrote on his blog on GoaldenGoals.co.uk.
“They go to Old Trafford to face United who are not, in my view, as strong or dominant as a team as they once were under Sir Alex.”
Southampton are currently sitting in fourth place while United are down in ninth four points behind Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
However Wayne Rooney has been in form for his country, scoring two goals in as many games on Friday and Tuesday and the forward scored both goals in a 2-1 win in this fixture last
season.
United will be looking to improve on their previous home performance where they lost 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion, a result which Le Tissier believes will give the Saints confidence.
“They have already been beaten at home by West Brom-a result which was pretty much unheard of in past seasons,” he wrote.
Southampton go into the game on the back of three successive wins and four straight clean sheets.
One of those victories was a 1-0 win at Anfield where they ended Liverpool’s 100 per cent start to the season.
United though will be looking to build on their 2-1 victory away at Sunderland before the international break as they aim to put a winning run together.
United’s only injury concern is Tom Cleverley who has a groin strain while Southampton have a fully fit squad to chose from.
