Fans help Oldham Athletic sign giant Latvian defender Edijs Joksts through PlayerShare scheme

By Matthew Lees

The fans of Oldham Athletic have helped strengthen Lee Johnson’s squad through the signature of giant Latvian defender Edijs Joksts.

The centre back turns 21 on Sunday and moves to Boundary Park to boost Athletic’s back line ahead of the expected departure of Jean-Yves M’voto.

With Johnson having already signed seven players, fans were keen to help through Trust Oldham’s PlayerShare scheme.

“The whole concept of PlayerShare is that it allows fans to contribute and be part of the signing and development of a player,” said Trust Oldham Chairman and Latics’ Director Barry Owen.

“And the manager sees Edijs as a player with great potential for the future.”

The Latvian under-21 international secured a one-year deal, subject to Football Association approval and international clearance, after impressing on trial.

Trust Oldham has previously helped to secure the services of strikers Luke Beckett and Shefki Kuqi plus Cedric Evina.

Latics supporters can help towards Joksts’ future of the club by signing up to the PlayerShare scheme at http://trustoldham.co.uk/pages/news/latic-playershare-2010.aspx.

Meanwhile, Oldham’s televised League One clash against Preston North End on September 9 will now kick off at 7:35pm.
