Oldham Athletic manager Lee Johnson was delighted for his club after they earned their first victory since November with a 2-0 win away to Fleetwood Town.
After a goalless first half Carl Winchester scored his first of the season with a curling 20-yard shot before Liam Kelly’s precise free-kick secured the points for the Latics.
Johnson was happy to answer his critics and believes his side got the result their performance deserved.
“The win was really important for us. We played very well in our last two games previous to this game and only came out with one point,” he said.
“People started questioning us, have we got the quality to be up there, and it was important today that we came and gave a good show of ourselves and to get a clean sheet and to score two fantastic goals and completely dominate the second half.
“I’m delighted for the whole club but let’s not go overboard. It’s a win and we continue in the right direction. We had only 13 fit players, but Brian Wilson came off so that makes it 12.”
The 33-year-old reserved praise for the two goalscorers, especially Winchester, and believes the young defender could move on to greater things if he can find consistency.
“Kelly was a man mountain and he hates losing, whether it be tiddlywinks, 5-a-side or a first team match. He has a deep desire to win every ball, every tackle and he led the group by example,” he said.
“Carl Winchester was excellent all 90 minutes and it was a great finish for the goal. He was nice and smooth on the ball and he added the end product.
“He is a Premier League player if he produces the end product on a regular occasion. I spoke to him about it and I was delighted for him because it had a good effect for him instantly.”
