Matej Zagar stars as Belle Vue Aces romp to Peterborough Panthers speedway victory

By Matt Davies

Matej Zagar was in fantastic form as Belle Vue stormed to victory over Peterborough on Monday, much to the delight of team manager Jason Attwood.

The Rentruck Aces romped to a 54-39 win against the Panthers, enough to lift the Manchester-based club to the dizzy heights of fourth in the Elite League.

Slovenian Grand Prix star Zagar finished the meeting with 11 points and unbeaten by a visiting rider, giving Attwood plenty of opportunity to praise his prize asset.

“Zagar is looking the part at number one and I am sure he will only get stronger as he gets more and more meetings under his belt,” said Attwood.

“But it’s no good having a number one if the rest of the team are not giving him the right support.

“And we’ve managed to do that for a second week in a row.”

Polish rider Artur Mroczka won his first three heats on his way to a ten-point haul while young German Kevin Wolbert also added nine.

The Aces got off to a flying start with three 5-1 heat wins in the first four, but it was Zagar’s expert riding in Heat Ten which took the eye.

He came from the back of the back to take second, leaving Linus Sundstrum and Norbert Kosciuch in the dirt and supporting Wolbert to another maximum points heat.

Englishman Craig Cook also found some form, winning Heat 14 on his way to eight points while Magnus Zetterstrom and Kauko Nieminen both added six.

Ales Dryml took four points including a terrific ride in Heat 11 to take second behind Mroczka, giving the Aces their fifth 5-1 of the meeting.

Nieminen and Zetterstrom followed suit in Heat 12 before Peterborough did restore some pride by taking maximum points in the final heat.

Next up for the Aces is a return to the Panthers on Friday April 26.
