England’s newly announced head coach Thomas Tuchel says he wants to achieve success with the Three Lions by building on the legacy of former manager Gareth Southgate.
The 51-year-old was confirmed today as the new England head coach with an 18-month contract effective from January 2025.
He said: “We would build on everything that Gareth and the FA built, and hopefully we can add a bit of extra to get it (the results) over the line.”
On the length of his contract – 18 months – the former Chelsea manager said it was not a first.
He said: “I have a history with 18 months. It’s a little bit of a stepp into the unknown for me.
This will be very different experience.”
Tuchel, who managed Chelsea to Champions League success in 2021 and later managed Bayern Munich, has no plans on stripping Harry Kane of the captaincy, but said it was too early to make such decisions.
He said: ” Everyone knows how I feel about Harry. I fought very hard to bring him to Bayern. He is already on his way to being a legend.”
Mark Bullingham, FA Chief Executive, confirmed they spoke to about 10 candidates for the position but considered Tuchel the best candidate, and one the FA believes is capable of bringing home a major trophy.
Tuchel’s tenure will formally begin on 1 January 2025. He is the first German and third foreign head coach of England, after Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
