Manchester United’s Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea may not be first choice for his country, but his girlfriend certainly is.
De Gea has been in blistering form this term, and now his partner Edurne Garcia is set to represent the Iberian nation at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in May.
The 29-year-old stunner, who shot to fame in 2005 after appearing in Spain’s ‘Pop Idol’ equivalent, is hoping Louis van Gaal will allow his shot-stopper to travel to Vienna in support of her, though it would mean him missing the final match of the Premier League season.
She told the Daily Mail: “He was very happy for me when I told him, just like my family and friends.
“The people who love you share in your good news. David and I are very happy together but I think he’s going to be tied up with league commitments.
“I hope he can be there at the final along with my family and friends so we can live the experience together.”
Spanish football has been at the pinnacle of the game in recent seasons, though they only managed a 10th place finish in Eurovision 2014.
And despite De Gea’s spectacular showings over the past year, he has been able to oust Iker Casillas from the Spanish starting XI, in spite of a poor showing from the veteran ‘keeper in last year’s World Cup.
Casillas has been a stalwart for both the national side and domestic giants Real Madrid over the last 10 seasons, but De Gea is now being tipped as his natural successor.
It remains to be seen whether Carlo Ancelotti’s side will test United’s resolve in the January transfer window, though a summer bid does seem likely.
