Put a stamp on it: Manchester City’s Toni Duggan says women’s side can beat majority of others

Manchester City LFC striker Toni Duggan says if things go their way they can trump just about anybody.

Duggan, talking after her two-goal performance in the 2-1 victory over Reading FC Women in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, said the match gave them confidence ahead of Thursday’s Women’s Super League opener against Liverpool.

Although City’s defence looked vulnerable at times, Duggan insisted patience was the key to victory and most likely their debut season after a first competitive outing at the weekend.

“We are in good form and can show the rest of the league how we can play,” Duggan told MM.

“The main job is to focus on ourselves. As long as we get that right I feel that we can beat the majority of the teams out there.”

Thanks to Duggan’s goals City progressed into the next round of the cup along with other teams including Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton.

“It’s too early to say that we will go on and win it because our win today was the first competitive game together,” Duggan said.

“We can’t go out there and put a stamp on it that we are going to win it. But I would love a good cup run.

“At Everton I won the F.A cup and it was one of the highlights of my club career, so I would love to carry on and in the next round put in a good performance.”

The 22-year old striker also scored four goals in pre-season matches and a hat-trick for England in their recent 9-0 victory against Montenegro in the 2015 World Cup qualifier.

Duggan, unsurprisingly, is on top of the world.

“I’m delighted with the goals today and recently. I’m a striker so that is part of my job and as long as I am winning with my team, whether that be City or England, I’m a happy player,” the Liverpool born player said.

“Last season I was in good form too. England and Everton didn’t have the best seasons last year but I set myself my own tasks and stuck to them and thankfully they came off.

“I’ve kept that momentum going and long may it continue. I was set with a new challenge when I came to City and I’m glad that it’s paying off again.”
