Jose Mourinho has claimed beating Manchester City to the Premier League would be his greatest achievement, eclipsing his against-the-odds Champions League triumph with Porto or any previous domestic title.
City’s goal scoring feats this season have been smashing records – the count currently stands at 94 goals in 31 games, already one more than last season – but their inconsistent start to the season gave them ground to make up.
They currently sit in second, one point behind Arsenal – with Mourinho’s Blues a further point behind but the Portugese believes City have an entire squad of players in their prime.
“City, in terms of power of the squad, they are in another dimension. You can’t compare their situation with any other club,” he told the Evening Standard.
“Man City are in the perfect moment. They don’t have old players or young players.
“At Chelsea, it would be my greatest achievement if we beat them to the title this year.”
After October’s 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, City sat six points off the lead but have recovered to overtake Mourinho’s men and will be seeking revenge when the sides meet again on February 3.
The return of captain Vincent Kompany has coincided with an improvement in their defensive record and they have now have won 14 of a 16-game unbeaten run.
The enigmatic Chelsea manager has marked the Citizens as having the potential to continue that form and turn English trophies into a monopoly.
“Chelsea won three Leagues in six years, the Double, many FA Cups, Champions League semi-finals and finals,” he said.
“I think they have to do the same thing Chelsea did.”
