Edinson Cavani’s potential move to Manchester City is in serious doubt after his father revealed the Uruguayan international pines for a transfer to Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old Napoli striker is currently with his country on Confederations Cup duty, but is expected to leave the Stadio San Paolo this summer.
In spite of Cavani junior being unsure if La Liga would suit his playing style, his father Luis believes a move to the Spanish capital will take place.
“Cavani’s intention is to play for Madrid. He is excited about it and is very willing to see it through,” he told Futboleros.
“There has been contact with Real Madrid’s lawyers and now we are waiting for the two clubs to meet.
“I hope it happens and that talks take place as soon as possible. Who wouldn’t want to play for Real Madrid?
“He has told the family in private that he wants to join Real Madrid but if he declares it publicly it will annoy Napoli.”
If last season’s Serie A top scorer is to move to Madrid – or indeed Manchester – then his £53million Napoli release clause will have to be met.
Cavani’s family have put out mixed messages though, as his mother Berta Gomez yesterday told a Montevideo radio station her son would prefer a move to the Citizens over Chelsea.
“Edi is in talks with Manchester City and Real Madrid,” she said.
“Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis has spoken about the possibility of discussions with Chelsea but there is nothing definite with them at the moment.
“We will know more in 15 to 20 days. There are so many voices, and when something happens I will be the first to know.”
