The Lancashire Cricket Board women’s cricket team has changed its moniker to LCB Thunder, in an attempt to increase media interest in the side.
The change comes ahead of a big summer for the side, which will be playing in the top tier of the county game following last season’s promotion.
Jennifer Laycock, LCB Women and Girls Cricket Development Officer, thinks that the move could have ramifications not just for the Lancashire side, but for the women’s game as a whole.
“This is great news for county cricket, but also for the development of the game,” said Laycock.
“As clubs work hard to promote the women and girls game at local level, something very sellable at the top end is so important.
“We have seen the power of this with the ECB Women and the coverage they have had. I believe this is the first step towards making women and girls’ cricket at all levels more accessible and more attractive.”
The move is yet another exciting piece of news for a sport that has been progressing rapidly in recent times.
MM spoke to Laycock and Lancashire’s England international Kate Cross in March about the effects that professional contracts and increased media coverage are having on the game, whilst Australia’s Meg Lanning was honoured as the inaugural Women’s Cricketer of the Year by Wisden last week.
And LCB Managing Director Bobby Denning underlined the LCB’s commitment to increasing the profile of the women’s game.
“This is a big step forward for women’s cricket,” he said.
“We believe this is a great way to increase media coverage of the game, make the game attractive to new players and retain players within women’s cricket.”
