Robin van Persie has quashed reports he wants out of Manchester United by claiming he is ‘very happy’ and would be ‘delighted’ to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman has come under fire in recent weeks amid suggestions of a rift with manager David Moyes.
Van Persie’s reaction to being substituted during United’s 3-0 win at West Brom last weekend has also fuelled speculation the former Arsenal hitman wants out.
Speaking to the official matchday programme, United Review, Van Persie has moved to set the record straight.
“The truth is I’m very happy here at this club,” Van Persie said.
“I signed for four years and I would be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract.”
Van Persie was the biggest defining factor in United cantering to the Premier League title last season.
He netted 26 times last term in the league and while this seasons’ return of 11 in 16 starts is impressive, many have questioned his performances.
“I don’t mind if my performances get dissected and people criticise what I have done on the pitch,” Van Persie explained.
“They can talk about my game 24/7 for all I care – and a lot of those opinions and criticisms may actually be right.”
Reports have suggested that United’s star striker has become a desolate figure in training, which was fuelled by his recent criticism of his team-mates following
Van Persie criticised team-mates on Dutch TV for ‘getting in his way’ after United’s 2-0 defeat by Olympiakos a in the Champions League last-16 first leg.
“What I need to address is the situations when people are taking it upon themselves to think for me,” Van Persie said.
“Last time I checked, my head was still attached to my body so I’m the only one who knows how I’m feeling.”
The comments should come as a bit of rest-bite for David Moyes, who faces a tough run of games in what has already been a difficult first season in charge.
United face fierce-rivals Liverpool on Sunday, then they host Olympiakos in the crucial Champions League second-leg followed by a date with neighbours Manchester City.
While rumours of tension between Moyes and Van Persie have been rife this season, the striker says he is very happy with the manager.
“There is mutual respect between us and the work environment is actually good,” the Dutchman said.
“I can tell you that Moyes’ sessions and the things he tells you in team meetings are spot-on.
“I’m absolutely convinced things will pick up and we’ll turn it around.”
