Five sporting events to look out for this weekend

With a plethora of events taking place this weekend from an intense rugby quarter final in France to a boxing showdown right here in Manchester, we list down the top five events that might tickle your fancy...

Rugby union:

If you’re looking for some high intensity thrill, then rugby might be for you. Taking place over the weekend are the Rugby World Cup quarter finals. Fixtures include Wales v Argentina and Ireland v New Zealand commencing on Saturday, with England v Fiji and France v South Africa the day later.

International Football: 

England welcomes Australia at home as they face each other in a friendly international game this Friday at 7.45pm.

This is the first meeting between England and Australia since May 2016 in a friendly at the Stadium of Light, won 2-1 by England with goals from Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney.

The Three Lions know Australia will relish the chance to beat one of their great sporting rivals in front of a sold-out crowd at Wembley Stadium. 

This comes before their Uefa Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday and another two qualifiers before the year is out.

Boxing:

YouTuber KSI (Olajide Olayinka) fights 24-year-old Tommy Fury in a six-round cruiserweight bout at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday. 

The fight takes place as part of an Influencer Boxing event as it will not be licensed by the British Boxing Board of Control. KSI does not hold a pro licence in the UK whereas Love Island runner-up Fury, is a professional and has won all nine of his professional fights.

Rugby league:

The Super League Grand Final takes place on Saturday at Old Trafford, with Wigan facing French club Catalans Dragons in front of an expected crowd of 60,000.

Women’s Super League Football:

Five matches are taking place on Sunday during the third week of the Women’s Super League include thrilling fixtures such as Manchester United v Leicester City, Manchester City v Bristol City, Arsenal v Aston Villa, Brighton v Tottenham and Merseyside derby, Liverpool v Everton.

Highlights for the weekend include last year’s Ballon D’or nominee Beth Mead, returning to full Arsenal training after her ACL injury, Leicester currently leading the table and Rehanne Skinner leading West Ham this season as the club’s first female manager.
