Stronger than ever: Vincent Kompany sees an era of Manchester City dominance after signing on until 2019

With Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany joining playmaker David Silva in signing a five-year contract extension at the Premier League champions, it is little wonder the former thinks the club currently has its strongest ever squad.

Belgian defender Kompany today confirmed his place at the Etihad until 2019, like Silva yesterday, while Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri have also put pen to paper this summer.

Kompany, again like Spaniard Silva, has been ever-present throughout City’s glory years since their FA Cup triumph in 2011 and thinks the club couuld be on for a Manchester United-esque era of dominance.

“This team is stronger now than it’s ever been,” Kompany told the club’s website.

“We have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.

“There are so many new landmarks and records to chase and I hope signing this new contract is taken as a statement of intent that I want to keep fighting for trophies for this special club.”

There is no doubting Kompany’s commitment to a cause, as shown when playing for Belgium at this year’s World Cup or over years of hard grind at City.

He is viewed as a club legend by City fans and past players like Franny Lee, United and other title rivals’ fans wish they could have a centre back as reliable and dedicated and since joining from Hamburg in 2008, Kompany has amassed more than 240 appearances for the Sky Blues.

Not only is Kompany a superb last-line of defence for Manuel Pellegrini’s troops, he is also a staunch supporter of City’s expanding and multi-cultural ethos, which has seen the club purchase Melbourne City FC, New York City FC and buy a stake in Yokohama F Marinos.

“We have a common goal and so much to look forward to – a family of clubs, the opening of City Football Academy, exciting players coming through our youth system – why would I go anywhere else?” the 28-year-old added.
