A day after Katherine Grainger became Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian another of Team GB’s golden girls will bid for an unprecedented milestone of her own.
Charlotte Dujardin could become the first British female to win three Olympic gold medals when dressage’s team grand prix special gets underway on day seven.
With double gold at London 2012, the 31-year-old can build on what already is an exceptional collection and having ranked first in the grand prix test aboard Valegro she is odds on to do so.
Speaking of success stories from London, two of the stars from Super Saturday begin their Olympic title defences as the athletics gets underway in Rio.
Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford will lead Team GB out as the heptathlon begins with the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m and the long jump qualification round takes place.
Tom Bosworth will contest the 20km race walk, while Jo Pavey, Beth Potter and Jess Andrews go in the women’s 10,000m final.
The men’s 400m and 800m heats and the women’s 100m and 1500m heats also take place, as does the women’s hammer qualification.
Elsewhere, Sir Bradley Wiggins will attempt to become the most decorated British Olympian of all time as he and the men’s team pursuit go for gold after ranking first in the qualification.
Progress will be made in the men’s sprint with Jason Kenny and Callum Skinner looking to make the final later in the week.
And Richard Kruse leads Team GB in fencing’s team foil quarter-final alongside James Davis and Laurence Halsted having finished fourth individually.
Those medals will be decided on the day, as will the women’s pair and the men’s four in rowing on the iconic Lagoa course – two high-profile gold medal chances for Team GB on day seven.
Amber Hill goes for gold in shooting’s women’s skeet alongside Elena Allen, while Jazz Carlin will be looking for her second swimming medal in the 800m freestyle final.
Ben Proud is also in finals action in the 50m freestyle and Kat Driscoll and Bryony Page will both be in action in the women’s gymnastics trampoline event.
Elsewhere Rebecca Gallantree and Grace Reid begin diving’s women’s 3m competition with the preliminary round, Justin Rose and Danny Willett start their second rounds in the golf and the Team GB men’s hockey team have a crucial match against Spain.
The Laser and Laser Radial fleets are back as sailing continues at Marina da Gloria with the men’s and women’s RS:X completing their set of 12 outings before the all-important double scoring medal races on Sunday.
Chris and Gabby Adcock are back out in badminton’s mixed doubles in a must-win fixture, as are men’s doubles pair Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis and women’s pair Lauren Smith and Heather Olver.
And the Team GB men’s table tennis team face France in the first round while Andy Murray faces American Steve Johnson in the quarter-final of the men’s singles.
