‘Consistency and momentum’: Manchester United’s title defence gathering speed, says David Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes says his side are starting to show some momentum as they attempt to defend their Premier League title.

United held on to claim a 1-0 win over league leaders Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday to move just five points behind the Gunners.

Moyes praised the commitment of his side and hopes they can continue their recent improved form.

“I am pleased we are beginning to show a little more consistency and momentum,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“Let’s hope we can continue that. This was a big result for us. Arsenal have been in terrific form this season.

“It is a close-run league this year and there will be a few shocks.”

United scored the winner after 27 minutes as Robin van Persie headed a Wayne Rooney corner into the back of the Arsenal net.

Arsenal controlled the second half and threatened the United goal on a number of occasions but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

It was a display of resilience from the defending Premier League champions to hold off the in-form Gunners.

Rooney put in a man-of-the-match display though Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were also impressive in keeping Arsenal at bay.

Jones was deployed in a central midfield role in the first half before switching to centre back when Nemanja Vidic suffered a head injury in a clash with his own keeper David De Gea.

“He has gone to hospital,” Moyes said.

“I have only just seen him myself and I didn’t see how bad it was from the touchline but it was a terrible clash.

“It was an accident but hopefully he will be ok.”

The victory moves United up to fifth in the league table after an underwhelming start to the season – ahead of neighbours Manchester City.

They will travel to Cardiff after the international break hoping to build on the positives of the Arsenal win.
