Is beautiful game making beautiful homes? Man City and United fans take club colours into their houses

As a city, we’re renowned football fanatics, but new research has shown that our sporting allegiances could even influence our interior design.

United and City play in red and blue respectively, and the people of Manchester are apparently more likely to decorate their living rooms in those colours than the rest of the country.

According to a study commissioned by sofa company DFS, Mancunians use those colours in their sitting rooms 3% more than the rest of the country, whilst they are also 6% more likely to buy a blue sofa.

Interestingly, more than two in five (42%) opt for grey tones, claiming that it makes them feel happy – something which may surprise those of us for whom the grey skies of Manchester are a more than adequate dosage of the hue.

Meanwhile, supporters of the white rose of Yorkshire will be disappointed to learn that their county compatriots have the highest preference for red in the country, whilst the east of the country has some explaining to do, after they topped the polls for painting in pink.

The study, labelled The Colour Match Experiment, was commissioned to explore how colours in our homes affect our moods and emotions.

Dr David Lewis, neuroscientist at Mindlab who partnered with DFS in the study, said: “It’s clear from the results that there’s a very strong correlation between certain shades and specific emotions.”

This leaves us to assume that people in Scarborough are more fabulous than the rest of us, Yorkshiremen are permanently angry and Mancs are obsessed with football.

We’ll leave you to decide how accurate that is.
