Jamie Allen was likened to a ‘young Paul Scholes’ as he helped Rochdale to their first away victory over Port Vale in the club’s 106-year history last night.
Rochdale won 1-0 at Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint trophy second round on night of firsts for the club and its players alike.
Dale’s victory over the League One side was the first at Vale Park in the club’s 106-year history and their first within 90 minutes in the competition since October 2005.
Dale full-back Joe Rafferty, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Sunday, enjoyed a late present heading in his first goal in professional football from a Michael Rose cross in the 40th minute.
Despite Rafferty’s milestone achievement, it was 18-year-old debutant Allen who stole the show, demonstrating maturity beyond his years with an intelligent midfield display.
Senior members of the Dale squad were quick to praise Allen, taking to Twitter shortly after the game.
Rose, whose strike against Wycombe was recently voted Dale’s September goal of the month, tweeted: “Much better performance from the boys tonight! Buzzin for @JamieAllen95 like a young Paul Scholes out there, watch this space!”
Defender Olly Lancashire added: “Great performance and win. Also what a debut from young @ JamieAllen95 #youngScholes.”
Forward Ian Henderson also took to the social networking site to praise his young team-mate.
“Massive shout out to debutant @JamieAllen95 he ran the show tonight,” he tweeted.
Despite throwing Allen in at the deep end, Rochdale boss Keith Hill selected a strong squad as he looked for a reaction to the 3-0 defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday.
Hill’s men delivered, rewarding the 107 hardy supporters who travelled to Staffordshire for their loyalty with some slick pass-and move football and a victory.
