Marouane Fellaini will delay vital surgery on his wrist so that he can help Manchester United’s battle for a top four spot.
The Belgian international would have been out for up to six weeks for surgery on a wrist ligament injury but will instead play in a protective cast.
The £27.5million summer signing is expected to play for Belgium in their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Croatia and Wales this week.
Belgian team doctor Kris Van Crombrugge told The Guardian: “Marouane will have surgery in December or January, unless he is ruled out in the meantime by something such as a suspension.
“After that, he will need a recovery period of one week or two at the most. Beyond that, he can resume playing by using a brace to protect the wrist.
“The surgery is not urgent and that is why it can be delayed. He was in too much pain to play for United last weekend, but now it has been taped, he is fine to play.”
However news of the midfielder’s injury was met by a barrage of hateful messages on the club’s Facebook page from angry fans.
“Great News! Please don’t recover,” said Nicholas Ho in a comment which received more than100 likes.
Meanwhile Michael Devlin posted: “No great loss. We look better without him. So far he looks lost on the pitch. Biggest waste of 30 million ever?”
Fellaini is expected to be available for United’s next league fixture at home against Southampton.
