Manchester United boss David Moyes keeping cards close to his chest on potential transfer targets

By John McDougall

New Manchester United manager David Moyes revealed he is still no closer to bringing in any new signings to enhance the Premier League title-winning squad he inherited.

Moyes started work last week as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor and has already had a bid of £12million for England defender Leighton Baines rejected by ex-club Everton.

But the 50-year-old, speaking at the announcement of United’s partnership with Russian airline Aeroflot, the Red Devils boss kept his cards close to his chest on new targets.

“I could not tell you anything today,” said the Glaswegian, responding to a tongue-in-cheek question from a BBC journalist.

“I was made very aware by the previous manager that this club has a lot of sponsors which was very much part of the job and I am delighted that we have got another sponsor on board.

“From what I’ve seen so far, it is an exciting project for the club.”

Ferguson bowed out of the Old Trafford hotseat after more than 26 years in charge, winning 38 trophies including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

United are rumoured to be close to sealing a £17million deal for young Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with the move potentially going through this week.

The Premier League champions depart on a pre-season tour – including Thailand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Sweden – later this week.
