Commonwealth champion James Goddard leads Manchester contingent into British Gas swimming champs

By Matthew Lees

Greater Manchester-based swimmer James Goddard has confirmed he will compete at the British Gas Swimming Championships later this month.

The Stockport Metro swimmer will race in his 12th British Championship having competed in all but one edition of the competition since it began in 2001.

The defending and two-time Commonwealth 200m backstroke champion will compete in the event after swimming the 200m Individual Medley at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Goddard will hope to repeat his success of a decade ago when he won his first 200m back title but faces London 2012 teammates Chris Walker-Hebborn and Roberto Pavoni.

Former Oldham Seals swimmers Jessica Lloyd and Jessica Fullalove will also compete for City of Manchester Aquatics at the event.

Lloyd, who was part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team in London, will swim in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle plus the 50m back.

Her teammate Fullalove will swim against her in the 50 while also competing in the 100m and 200m back.

University of Manchester graduate Michael Rock, who defeated Michael Phelps in the 2009 Duel in the Pool at the Aquatics Centre, swims the 100m and 200m butterfly.

The event takes place between June 26 and 30 at Ponds Forge in Sheffield and will also act as the trials for the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona.
