Let’s strike the first blow: Manchester United reserves issue battle cry ahead of City derby clash

Manchester United have an early opportunity to strike back at their arch rivals Manchester City tonight, albeit at reserve level, in a derby clash this evening in the Robinson’s Brewery Senior Cup.

The Manchester Senior Cup trophy final tonight, kicking off at 7pm, will feature the cream of the crop of hot prospects from both Old Trafford and Eastlands and will be played at non-league Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields ground.

Premier League supremacy might not be on the agenda, but what can be sure that it will still be a hotly contested affair between the two rivals, with a capacity ground expected.

“I think it’s an important game,” stressed the Reds’ right-sided prospect Saidy Janko (pictured.

“We need to win – for ourselves and the club as well.”

The Red Devils have triumphed 27 times in this competition to date and coach Warren Joyce’s charges have secured the trophy on the last three occasions.

The United Reserves sealed the qualification to this final back in September 2013 with the emerging first-team hotshot Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha scoring to overcome a Bolton Wanderers side 4-0.

Joyce’s men will want to banish the disappointment of the Barclays U-21 Premier League season as they missed out on the title to Chelsea.

There is every reason to why Joyce will be confident his can bounce back after an encouraging performance in their last pre-season fixture against Barnsley, after defeating the Yorkshire side 2-1, with promising midfielder Josh Harrop netting both goals.

Joyce believes his side could have done with another match, but its set to field a strong and prepared side.

“It’s been a bit of a gap,” the former Hull City boss told MUTV.

“We would have maybe liked another game in between, but we’ve trained and looking forward to the City game.”

The match will feature some of the Reds Devils’ youngsters who went with new boss Louis van Gaal on their tour to the United States, with James Wilson, who made his senior debut under David Moyes  last season, set to play.

The City side will also field some intriguing prospects, with Welsh starlet Emyr Huws set to get some pitch time.

Advanced Ticket information for this fixture is available from both Manchester United and Manchester City ticket offices.

Hyde FC will also have tickets available on the door at £ 3 for adults and £1 for Concessions.
