Oldham Athletic manager Lee Johnson was disheartened by his side’s poor showing as they crashed out of the FA Cup against Doncaster Rovers, managed by former Latics boss Paul Dickov.
George Elokobi’s calamitous, late own-goal proved the difference between the two sides as Oldham lost 1-0 in a game in which they spurned several good opportunities.
Johnson was concerned that unless his side improve, similarly lacklustre performances like Saturday’s efforts may dent his side’s promotion chances.
“I’m very disappointed to be out the cup,” he said.
“Obviously we wanted to have a good run and we saw it as an opportunity today in front of our home fans to advance but it just goes to show that when you think you’ve cracked it, it comes to bite you on the backside.
“I don’t want to get greedy but I expect more from my players.”
A remarkable 13-game unbeaten run earlier this season has helped Johnson’s side storm up the table and into the play-off places, and he is determined not to see his team’s good work undone.
The Latics face second-from-bottom Yeovil town next weekend and Johnson is already targeting the game as a chance to make amends for defeat to Doncaster, and to cement their place in the table.
“They will have to lick their wounds and get ready for Saturday because I don’t want to stand for that,” he said.
“Unless they see the error of their ways then we can’t get better.
“It’s about getting better and we have to get better. We have lost and are out of the cup but we are very much in with a shout of the play-offs.”
