Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah scored a 70th-minute penalty against the Red Devils in Sunday’s 2-2 draw, claiming the all-time record for the most goal contributions ever registered at the halfway point of the Premier League season.
The Egyptian’s spot kick sent Liverpool ahead with 20 minutes left on the clock but he was denied the match-winner through a late Amad Diallo strike.
The penalty was Salah’s 31st goal contribution in the Premier League this season (18 goals, 13 assists) – beating Luis Suarez’s record of 30 goal contributions in 19 games in the 2013/14 Premier League season.
The winger tops both the goal and assist charts league-wide – two goals clear from Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race and three assists ahead of Bukayo Saka in his hunt for the Playmaker Award.
This game also marks the 12th match that Mohamed Salah has scored in against Manchester United across their last 14 outings, extending his sizeable lead as the fixture’s highest ever scorer.
The next record that Salah will surely be aiming for, to add to his many, is the most goal involvements against a single opponent in Premier League history.
This is currently held by Wayne Rooney who registered a mighty 23 goal contributions versus Newcastle, but the Liverpool forward is hot on his tail with 19 involvements against Manchester United.
Of course, this is dependent on whether the 32-year-old commits his future to Liverpool – the Egyptian is now able to negotiate deals with other clubs and will be leaving the city this summer barring a contract offer.
Salah, who is widely recognised as the frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, registered the most goal involvements of any player across Europe’s top five Leagues in 2024 and will be hoping to replicate such blistering form this year.
The current record for the most goal involvements across a 38-game Premier League season belongs to both Thierry Henry and Erling Haaland, who registered 44 each in 2002/03 and 2022/23 respectively.
Their closest competitors are Luis Suarez, who ended the 2013/14 season with 43 contributions, and Salah himself in 2017/18, bagging 42 and setting a new Premier League goal record prior to Haaland’s arrival.
If the Egyptian’s streak is to continue, Mohamed Salah would shatter these numbers and reach over 60 goal involvements.
Perhaps United fans will feel grateful not only for the valuable point they gained at Anfield, but also for reducing Salah to merely a single goal this game.
