‘Get on with the job’: Bolton’s Lennon remains focused ahead of pivotal Cardiff clash

Neil Lennon has called on his side to put off-field issues aside by securing a first home win in six when they face Cardiff City at the Macron Stadium tomorrow.

The wider footballing world became fully aware of Wanderers’ desperate plight when news emerged on Monday that the players had not been paid for November, and with the Whites now four points adrift of safety, rarely can a morale-boosting win have been needed more.

As the Whites boss alluded to in his pre-match press conference, a swift resolution is needed with the threat of administration and a 12-point deduction looming.

“Whoever takes over and buys the club, well it’s their club and they make the decisions, so all you can do is get on with your job and not worry about that as a consequence,” Lennon said.

“There are three, maybe four interested parties and I think it’s basically a case of first past the post, a question of who can come up with the money first – Trevor [Birch] seems pretty happy that someone will get over the line.

“Who knows what can happen in January if we can bring in some reinforcements just to help the boys.

“You’re looking for a bit of unity, well we saw plenty on Monday night between the supporters and the players, and we need that unity now more than ever.”

Wanderers have won six out of the last eight meetings with tomorrow’s opponents – including a pair of 3-0 wins last season – and another victory would provide a much-needed boost.

Monday’s draw with Brentford saw Bolton’s winless run stretch to 12 games in all competitions – the worst streak in the Football League – but Lennon believes that the unwanted statistic does not tell the whole story.

“I’m not big into stats but we had 25 attempts at goal on Monday night so we must have done something right.

“It would be a real achievement if we could get a couple of wins, either get us out of the bottom three or stay in touching distance until we can get the club back on an even keel.

“It’ll be a tough game  Cardiff are a big physical team, well-organised, and they’re on a decent run themselves, but anyone’s capable of beating anyone in this division.”
