Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea says the growth of football in the US, apparent in their heroic World Cup displays, will one day signal the arrival of the game’s best on their shores.
Spain’s De Gea has been impressed with the high-profile footballing stars that have recently moved over to the MLS (Major League Soccer), including compatriot David Villa and Brazilian legend Kaka.
Big moves such as David Beckham’s LA Galaxy deal in 2007 and Thierry Henry’s departure for the New York Red Bulls four years ago, alongside stories like the USA’s group stage match against Portugal being the most-watched game ever in the States, lead to bigger and stronger leagues.
“More and more big players are going over there to play,” said De Gea.
“They are trying to build a strong league and are getting there. People are enjoying it more and more.”
De Gea had a happy and positive experience when he visited the US in the 2011 tour having just signed for United and believes it will be beneficial for new teammates Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera.
De Gea said: “I have a very nice memory of my first moments on tour with United. I remember vividly meeting the players and the first training sessions with them and Sir Alex. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
“The tour helps you learn to live and train with great footballers such as the ones at this club.
“It is such a big club and you realise how big it is when you travel abroad to countries like the United States and Japan. The club has such a huge fan base.”
De Gea is excited for the trip to the US as it will be highly beneficial for his pre-season and the team morale.
“We are all looking forward to our trip to the US. It’s very important to have a good pre-season, to gain pace and fitness for the long campaign ahead.”
United play LA Galaxy on July 23, Italian duo AS Roma and Inter Milan on July 26/29 respectively and then round off their visit with the 100,000 sell-out at the Michigan Stadium against 10-times European champions Real Madrid.
