Wiganna do it again! Wigan council backs club’s bid for FA Cup defence and promotion push

Wigan’s remarkable surge towards successive FA Cup wins has once again been backed by the council with the town’s streets now sporting a fresh lick of blue paint.

The campaign started last season when Roberto Martinez and his team defied the odds in the FA Cup final against favourites Manchester City and it is back again to support Uwe Rosler’s side ahead of their semi-final clash against Arsenal next weekend.

Last year, the success achieved by the town’s football club was backed up by Leigh Centurions Northern Rail cup win and Wigan Warriors’ double-winning success.

Now once more Wigan is ‘believing’ that the town can achieve sporting success and the newly-decorated town centre has been filled with messages of support.

“It’s been an incredible year for Wigan as a town,” said Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan.

“Seeing my hometown painted blue fills me with great pride. I’m confident that with the backing of our own town, Latics can bring the cup home once again and keep pushing up the league.”

The FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal will be the fourth time Wigan have played at Wembley in the last 12 months and they have the chance to play there twice more before the end of the season.

Councillor David Molyneux is delighted to see the ‘believe’ campaign return to the town.

“I hope that with the town behind them once again Latics can claim the FA Cup for a second year and make a return to the Premiership,” Councillor Molyneux said.

If Wigan can defy the odds again and reach the FA Cup final, the town will be jumping for joy like just over 12 months ago.

They also have promotion to play for, sitting fifth in the Championship and with an excellent chance of bagging a play-off berth given they are six points clear of Nottingham Forest in seventh.

Uwe Rosler’s men have the town ‘believing’ again that sporting glory is on the horizon for Wigan.
