Manchester City star Vincent Kompany has declared his pride at being offered an ambassadorial role with a leading children’s charity – in 12 different languages.
Kompany announced his new position as International Ambassador for SOS Children’s Villages, the world’s largest non-profit organisation for abandoned, destitute and orphaned children, on his Twitter account.
He then re-posted his statement in 12 different languages, reflecting the global scopeof his new role within the charity.
“I accept, with all my heart,” he tweeted at @VincentKompany. “I will carry the title of International Ambassador of SOS Children’s Villages with pride.”
The Manchester City captain also posted a copy of the letter sent to him by the charity, which he has supported for eight years as their Belgium ambassador.
SOS Children’s Villages expressed their gratitude for Kompany’s ‘vitally important’ commitment, particularly his work in raising awareness of the plight of Democratic Republic of Congo children.
“Naturally, we here in the UK office are delighted that Vincent Kompany has become an International Ambassador for SOS Children’s Villages,” Simon Etherington, the charity’s CEO, told MM.
“Apart from being an outstanding football player, he is also a passionate advocate for our work. Despite his busy schedule, he has always found time to further the cause of ensuring that those children with the least have the best chance of a decent start in life.”
Congo is the homeland of Kompany’s father and has the joint-lowest human development index, according to the United Nations, in the world following the Second Congo War, which raged between 1998 and 2003 and resulted in 5.4million deaths.
Like many other footballers, Kompany donates a considerable amount of time to his charity work, visiting local SOS Children’s Villages whenever the opportunity arises.
“I enjoy nothing more than playing a little game of football and listening to the stories of the SOS mothers,” the 27-year-old told the charity’s website.
“The great things that have happened in the Village, the difficulties they encounter. It inspires me, and gives me the strength to do as much as possible.”
